FEBRUARY 2024 NEWSLETTER

Hello Friend of CADF,

We are incredibly pleased to send you the first edition of the Citizen Action Defense Fund monthly newsletter. We are so excited to launch this – and our primary purpose is to keep supporters like you up to date on the latest successes, trials (literally and figuratively), and tribulations.

At the end of the day, we’re all in this fight together. We are working hard as champions of hope and accountability because we know that these wins and struggles are yours as well – as citizens of our state who want to see things get better in Washington.

The last time you heard from us, we sent you an update on what we were working on, introduced you to our new staff members here at CADF, launched our blog – Courts & Committees: Evergreen Edition, and many of you gave Governor Inslee a Christmas gift he hated by donating to CADF!

In this first edition of our newsletter, we have quite a few updates for you:

CASE UPDATES

Latest Win | Motion to Dismiss in our Brandi Kruse Public Records Lawsuit (unDivided Media LLC v. City of Seattle)

After we filed our public records lawsuit on behalf of Brandi Kruse and unDivided Media against the City of Seattle for withholding records from a city councilmember for illegal political reasons, the City of Seattle filed a Motion to Dismiss.

This past Friday, our Executive Director, Jackson Maynard, argued against the motion with help from Associate Counsel Sam Spiegelman, and the judge ruled in our favor by denying the City’s motion!
The lawsuit will continue on and we will keep you updated as it progresses.

2024 Initiatives | Amber & John Goldade

On January 31, 2024, we sent a letter to leading members of the legislature on behalf of the Goldades regarding the legislature’s failure to prioritize the six initiatives that had received approximately 2.7 million signatures.

Jackson Maynard, Executive Director, also spoke on behalf of the Goldades at a rally at the state capitol on January 31, 2024. We are pleased that the legislature has finally agreed to hear three of them, but has neglected to give hearings for the other three the way that the state constitution requires.
We will continue to monitor the situation and push for lawmakers to follow the law.

Please click here to see Amber’s testimony on SI 2113 / HI 2113, which would restore reasonable police pursuits in Washington State.

Department of Ecology Lawsuit | Legislation Blocking Sale of Gas-Powered Cars After 2030 (Padden and Corry v. State of WA)

We filed a summary judgment motion in our suit against the state over rules blocking the sale of cars that run on gasoline after 2030. The suit was brought by two members of the legislature, Senator Mike Padden and Representative Chris Corry to challenge legislation that allowed the Department of Ecology to adopt rules that were passed by an unelected board from California – which is blatantly unconstitutional.

In Other News…

We were invited to the Capitol to speak to the House Republican Caucus!
While we are a nonpartisan organization, it was an honor to have had the opportunity to go over our work and discuss some of the issues we’re working on this year.

CADF sponsored the 2024 Roanoke Conference
We also co-hosted a karaoke afterparty alongside League of Our Own WA! We had a chance to highlight our work, learn from many other amazing organizations, and hear more about issues impacting Washingtonians all across the state.
