CADF PETITIONS GOV. INSLEE FOR EMERGENCY RULEMAKING TO STOP A PROGRAM THAT WILL DEVASTATE WASHINGTON’S ECONOMY
Olympia, Washington — September 18, 2024 — The Citizen Action Defense Fund (CADF) has sent a formal letter to both Governor Inslee and the Director of the Department of Ecology to urge the Governor to exercise his emergency rulemaking authority to preempt (or at least delay) the schedule of California’s Advanced Clean Trucks (“ACT”) program.
Starting next year, the ACT program is set to force Washington-based trucking companies and associated businesses to comply with incredibly unrealistic emissions standards. This will not only negatively affect that industry, but our state and economy as a whole.
These crucial businesses comprise the very industry that helps keep our state running by transporting supplies, food, and other necessary resources. A program as detrimental as ACT would preclude them from turning any profit at all, if not forcing them to operate in the red, and customers would bear the burden of keeping that industry afloat.
“Put bluntly, wishful thinking is not a strategy and doesn’t equate to good policy,” said Jackson Maynard, Executive Director and Counsel for CADF. “Any decision made by the Governor or his various Departments, whether it pertains to the environment or anything else, must take into account how it would impact Washingtonians’ health, safety, and general welfare. No one should be trying to sacrifice the state’s citizens and economy on the altar of the Governor’s political agenda. We sincerely hope the executive changes course to avoid catastrophic consequences.”
